Understanding Hinduism: A Journey Through the World's Oldest Religion. Hinduism is one of the oldest religions in the world, and it is mainly followed in India, Nepal, and some other parts of South Asia. Many people believe that Hinduism is more than 4,000 years old, and some even say it has no exact beginning date because it slowly developed over time. Unlike other religions, Hinduism does not have just one founder or one holy book. It is like a big ocean that contains many rivers of thoughts, beliefs, and practices, all flowing together peacefully. The word 'Hindu' actually came from the river Sindhu (which we now call the Indus River). The people who lived near this river were called Hindus by outsiders, and slowly their way of life came to be known as Hinduism. In our own scriptures, this religion is called 'Sanatana Dharma,' which means the 'eternal way of life' or the 'forever truth.' One of the most beautiful things about Hinduism is that it believes in many gods and goddesses, but at the same time, it teaches that all these gods are different forms of one supreme power called Brahman. This might sound confusing in the beginning, but if you think about it carefully, it is like how the sun has many rays, but all rays come from the same sun. The three main gods of Hinduism are Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the protector), and Shiva (the destroyer). Together they are called the Trimurti.
